The Diagnosis and Treatment of Sacroiliac Joint Pain coverage policies of both BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) of Tennessee and BCBS of Massachusetts exclude coverage for radiofrequency denervation of the sacroiliac joint. These BCBS policies describe the treatment, also referred to as lateral branch radiofrequency neurotomy (LBRFN), as an investigational procedure.

On March 8, 2018, the Spine Intervention Society (SIS) issued comment letters to the insurers recommending that the procedure is an appropriate treatment for suitably selected patients, based on the SIS-convened multispecialty collaborative-endorsed set of appropriate use criteria for sacroiliac interventions.
