SIS Shares Concerns with California Workers' Comp Division Over Adoption of ACOEM Guidelines

On February 23, 2018, SIS informed the State of California’s Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) that the agency has adopted a set of guidelines on disorders of the cervical and thoracic spine and the low back that do not utilize the best available medical evidence and may jeopardize Californians with work-related injuries and illnesses.

California has established its workers’ comp medical treatment utilization schedule via adoption of guidelines from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). SIS finds several aspects of these guidelines deficient. SIS’s correspondence below provides references to specific evidence that supports the effectiveness of many diagnostic and treatment procedures not covered by these guidelines:
