SIS Joins AMA and Nearly 100 Societies in Voicing Concern About VA's Scope of Practice Regulations

Thursday, June 25, 2020
On June 25, 2020, SIS along with nearly 100 medical specialty societies provided comments to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regarding Directive 1899, which allows non-physician VA healthcare professionals in 32 specialties to operate within the full scope of their license, registration, or certification, circumventing state scope of practice laws. In addition, it eliminates physician supervision of CRNAs within the VA during this national health emergency. Such measures are not necessary to improve patient access to care, compromise the high quality team-based approach, and the lack of proper oversight threatens the health and safety of veterans and their families.
