SIS Convenes MPW to Advocate for Facet Interventions

Tuesday, May 19, 2020

The Spine Intervention Society convened the Multisociety Pain Workgroup (MPW) to discuss evidence and develop recommendations regarding the appropriate coverage of facet interventions. The resulting comment letters are being shared in advance of the May 28, 2020, Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) Multi-jurisdictional Contractor Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting.

The letters, signed by SIS and 11 other medical specialty societies, have been shared with the MAC medical directors and will be shared with CAC members for whom the participating societies have contact information.

The letters present the evidence in support of lumbar and cervical thermal radiofrequency neurotomy, highlighting the importance of accurate procedural technique and appropriate selection criteria in achieving optimal outcomes. They also outline specific coverage recommendations related to facet joint injections. It is hoped that the letters will help inform the discussion next week and promote development and implementation of coverage criteria that will ensure appropriate access to facet interventions for Medicare patients.

SIS members are encouraged to share these letters with any CAC members who will be participating in the meeting next week.

The MPW is a group of specialty societies with a proven track record in collaboration and consensus-building to provide a unified voice on the appropriate use of interventional spine procedures to accurately diagnose and treat patients suffering from spine pathologies.
