SIS Encourages Aetna to Cover Lateral Branch RF Neurotomy for SI Pain

Friday, April 26, 2019
On April 17, 2019, SIS provided comments to Aetna regarding their coverage policy on Back Pain—Invasive Procedures which excludes coverage for thermal radiofrequency ablation of the sacroiliac joint, also referred to as lateral branch radiofrequency neurotomy (LBRFN), classifying it as unproven or medically unnecessary. The Society recommends that the procedure is an appropriate treatment for suitably selected patients, based on the SIS-convened multispecialty collaborative-endorsed set of appropriate use criteria for sacroiliac interventions.
