SIS Advises NICE: Interventional Pain Physicians Treat Persistent Spondyloarthritis Pain

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

On February 6, 2018, the Spine Intervention Society (SIS) submitted comments to the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on their proposed quality standards for spondyloarthritis. Concurring with NICE’s proposed standards, SIS agrees that early referrals to rheumatologists are critical to caring for patients with spondyloarthritis. However, SIS also suggests that NICE allow referrals to interventional spine specialists for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in spondyloarthritis cases with persistent pain that does not respond to rheumatologists’ initial treatments. NICE expects to publish the final quality standard in June of 2018.
