This 16-hour radiofrequency procedures course has been developed using a systematic evidence-based approach and is designed to address professional practice gaps. Our courses are highly structured and utilize experienced instructors from multiple disciplines who provide lectures, hands-on bio-skills training utilizing fluoroscopic guidance, small breakout sessions, one-on-one instructor interaction, and participant discussion sessions to create a holistic learning experience.

Radiofrequency is a treatment option that has the potential to positively affect your patients’ well-being. This course is designed to teach you how to correlate imaging with the anatomy of the innervation of the zygapophysial joints; identify principles of radiofrequency lesioning; assess symptomology and interpret results of medial branch blocks to optimally select patients; and apply evidence-based knowledge to performance of radiofrequency neurotomy.

Both lumbar and cervical regions will be covered.

Radiofrequency techniques will include:

  • L2-4 Medial Branch
  • L5 Dorsal Ramus
  • Third Occipital Nerve (TON)
  • C3-6 Medial Branch
  • C7 Medial Branch

Lectures and Didactics will include:

Due to the advanced nature of this course, prior to registering, Fellow and Resident members must contact the SIS office at or 630.203.2252.

There are three airports that service the Long Beach area-Los Angles International Airport (LAX) which is 25 minutes from the hotel, John Wayne Airport (SNA) which is 35 minutes from the hotel, and Long Beach Airport (LGB) which is 15 minutes from the hotel.

Upon arrival at the airport, please arrange your own ground transportation to the hotel. The Society will provide transportation back to LAX on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. directly from the facility. Please make flight arrangements after 2:15 p.m. We will not provide Sunday transportation back to the hotel, to other airports, or to LAX prior to that time.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze the imaging depiction of the relevant anatomy;
  • Relate patient history and physical exam findings with imaging to achieve a likely diagnosis of the spinal pathology causing the patient’s pain or dysfunction;
  • Describe the literature support for the efficacy of the procedures;
  • Identify the risks and benefits of each procedure, as well as assessment, prevention, and treatment of potential complications;
  • Apply technically correct performance of the spinal procedures using safe fluoroscopic guidance with minimal tissue injury or discomfort.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)
The Spine Intervention Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The Spine Intervention Society designates this live activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The Spine Intervention Society advises participants to continue to obtain proctoring, mentoring, and additional experience prior to treating patients.

Target Audience

This live activity has been designed for physicians who perform spine intervention procedures. 

The Spine Intervention Society strongly advises that members are proficient in the lumbar spine before progressing to cervical techniques and other advanced interventional procedures.

Who May Attend
Spine Intervention Society members who are board-certified or in the examination process for certification in the following specialties: Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Radiology, Neurology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Neurosurgery. Members who are not board-certified or eligible in these specialties must have completed or be currently enrolled in an ACGME Pain Fellowship and begin at the lumbar level.

Requirements for Fellow and Resident Members
Fellow and Resident members must be board-eligible in one of the above 6 specialties and are required to take the SIS Lumbar Bio-Skills Lab as their first hands-on bio-skills course. Fellow and Resident members who are board-certified in one of the above 6 specialties may submit a waiver request to start instruction at the advanced lumbar level. The waiver request must come from their Program Director and should attest to the member’s skill level. Waiver requests must be submitted via email to:

Attendee Preparation
Prior to attendance, participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Spine Intervention Society-sanctioned materials that will be emailed at least one week prior to the course and SIS’s, Attendees will receive copies of the presented lectures upon completion of the course.

During lab time, attendees should dress in casual attire or scrubs and closed-toed shoes. Leaded aprons and thyroid shields will be provided; please bring your own protective eyewear.

Registration Information
Registration is required and accepted on a first come, first served basis. Registrants will be confirmed via email. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact the office. Do not book hotel accommodations or airfare until you are confirmed for the course. 

Cancellation Policy
The Spine Intervention Society requires cancellation at least 14-days prior to the course to receive a refund less a $100 administrative fee. Cancellation less than 14 days prior will result in forfeiture of all fees. SIS reserves the right to cancel this course due to circumstances beyond its control. The Society assumes no financial obligation to registrants for possible costs occurred.
