On January 17, 2018, SIS issued a comment letter to the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) to address their draft position statement Compounding of Medications by Physicians. SIS wholeheartedly supports FSMB’s efforts to formulate policies that ensure patient safety and agrees with the majority of the draft position statement. The draft position currently allows for exceptions to proposed regulations in specialties for which accepted practice regularly includes the preparation of sterile compounds by or under the supervision of a specially trained physician for their individual patients. SIS has requested that the applicable specialties, including interventional pain medicine, be specifically listed in the statement rather than including only allergy and immunology as an example.
