In a bid to counter identity theft, by April 2018, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will replace social security number based health insurance claim numbers with a new randomly generated Medicare beneficiary identifier.

Up to now, CMS referred to this development as the Social Security Number Removal Initiative (SSNRI). Moving forward, CMS will refer to this project as the New Medicare Card.

For further information visit this new CMS webpage for the latest details, including how to talk to your Medicare patients about the new card.
